Cultural Competence

Dr. Campinha-Bacote's Model

Dr. Campinha-Bacote developed a model of culturally competent health care based on five interdependent constructs. These five constructs have an interdependent relationship with one another.

Among the five are two constructs that distinguish it from other cultural competency models: "Cultural Encounters," and "Cultural Desire." These concern practical experience and the desire to become more culturally sensitive.

No matter where a healthcare provider begins their journey, he or she must eventually experience and address all five milestones along the way.

Cultural awareness
Cultural knowledge
Cultural skill
Cultural encounters
Cultural desire
