Defining Culture

"Culture" is a complex term with numerous definitions. In this module, we are using Cecil G. Helman's definition from the third edition of his widely-quoted text, Culture, Health and Illness: An Introduction for Health Professionals. Helman is globally recognized as setting the standard for talking about culture and healthcare. He discusses culture in terms of human culture, but also includes spirituality in a sense that is broader than religion.

Our cultural background influences all aspects of our lives. An awareness of your own cultural perspectives and preferences regarding healthcare is important before you provide healthcare to others.
